The Art of Asking Better Questions

Most of us spend our lives trying to come up with better answers.

Emily Wolfe believes we should spend more time asking better questions.

As a leadership coach, facilitator, strategist, and former journalist, Emily has built a career helping people think more clearly, communicate more intentionally, and work together more effectively. Rather than telling people what to do, she creates the conditions for them to discover their own answers.

In this conversation, we explore leadership, facilitation, curiosity, entrepreneurship, regenerative thinking, and why listening may be the most underrated leadership skill there is.

Making Conversations Easier

When most people hear the word facilitator, they imagine someone running a meeting.

Emily describes it much differently.

A facilitator creates an environment where people can think better together. Instead of steering conversations toward predetermined answers, they help groups uncover the intelligence that’s already in the room.

Whether she’s coaching a CEO, leading a nonprofit board, or helping a leadership team navigate change, Emily’s work centers around creating the conditions where meaningful conversations can happen.

Learning to Listen Without Assumptions

One of the most fascinating parts of the conversation centers around “Clean Language,” a communication methodology that encourages people to ask questions without inserting their own assumptions.

Rather than interpreting someone’s words, Emily practices using their exact language and asking thoughtful follow-up questions.

It’s a subtle shift that often leads to deeper understanding.

Instead of listening to respond, the goal is to listen with genuine curiosity.

That idea became especially relevant as we discussed podcasting and how asking better questions often has far less to do with talking than it does with paying attention.

Curiosity Is a Skill

Emily’s path wasn’t a straight line.

She studied English, worked as a journalist, ski patroller, wilderness therapy guide, writer, strategist, and eventually leadership coach.

Looking back, every experience had something in common.

She was always interested in understanding people.

Rather than seeing careers as disconnected chapters, Emily views them as different ways of exploring the same question: How do people learn, grow, and work together more effectively?

Leadership Isn’t Having All the Answers

Throughout the episode, we talk about imposter syndrome, entrepreneurship, and the pressure leaders often feel to always know the right answer.

Emily offers a refreshing perspective.

Strong leaders don’t need to have every solution.

Instead, they create environments where good ideas can emerge from the people around them.

Sometimes leadership looks less like directing people and more like asking the question that nobody else thought to ask.

Building Regenerative Businesses

One of my favorite moments came when we connected regenerative agriculture to business.

Farmers don’t simply harvest.

The best ones invest back into the soil so future harvests become stronger.

Emily believes businesses work the same way.

Great organizations reinvest in their people, communities, relationships, and themselves. They understand that long-term success isn’t about extracting as much as possible today. It’s about creating something healthier tomorrow.

That perspective applies just as much to leadership as it does to entrepreneurship.

The Long Game

Whether we’re building businesses, relationships, or communities, Emily reminds us that meaningful work rarely happens overnight.

Growth requires patience.

Better conversations require practice.

Leadership requires humility.

And perhaps most importantly, becoming a better listener is something we never really finish learning.
