Building Mountain Fresh Italian Ice

Derek Ivester never set out to build a statewide brand. Mountain Fresh Italian Ice started as a summer side project, scooping Italian ice at farmers markets in Livingston and Bozeman. More than a decade later, it has grown into a Montana-made product found in grocery stores, schools, hospitals, and events across the region.

In this episode, Derek shares how curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to figure things out along the way shaped the business into what it is today.

From Side Hustle to Staple

Mountain Fresh began with small batches made at home and long days at farmers markets. What started as a way to stay busy during the summer quickly revealed something bigger. People loved the product, and word spread.

As demand grew, Derek transitioned from retail scooping to manufacturing and wholesale, eventually partnering with local and national distributors. The business evolved organically, guided more by listening and learning than by a rigid plan.

Ingredients, Intention, and Impact

From the beginning, Derek paid close attention to what went into the product and what was left out. Mountain Fresh uses organic cane sugar, plant-based ingredients, and natural flavoring, avoiding artificial dyes and unnecessary additives.

That same philosophy extends to packaging and operations. Compostable cups, recyclable materials, and thoughtful sourcing reflect a broader goal of minimizing impact while still building a scalable business.

Teaching, Learning, and Leadership

Before Mountain Fresh became a full-time venture, Derek was a teacher. That background still shows up in how he approaches leadership, problem-solving, and growth. He talks openly about learning by doing, asking questions, and leaning on others with more experience.

One idea that comes up repeatedly in the conversation is simple but powerful: everything is figureoutable. From production equipment to distribution logistics, Derek emphasizes breaking big challenges into small, manageable steps.

Family, Music, and Staying Grounded

Mountain Fresh is very much a family effort. Derek’s wife and daughter have both played key roles in the business over the years, and that sense of shared ownership remains central to how the company operates.

Outside of work, music plays a major role in Derek’s life. Playing guitar, performing live, and staying creative help keep balance as the business continues to grow.
