In this episode of Mountain Mule Media, Tim sits down with Dan Brunner, a former FBI Special Agent and co-founder of the Brunner Sierra Group, to talk about a career spent investigating organized crime, terrorism, and gang activity, and how those experiences now shape his work helping families and individuals stay safe without living in fear.

Inside the Brunner Sierra Group
Dan and his wife run the Brunner Sierra Group, a firm built around two highly specialized services. His wife provides forensic accounting and litigation support for attorneys, helping make sense of massive volumes of financial records and testifying in court when needed. Dan focuses on security consulting for private families, executives, and high-net-worth individuals, helping clients understand vulnerabilities and create practical, layered security plans.
A Career in the FBI
Dan spent 20 years as an FBI Special Agent, much of that time investigating organized crime, MS-13, and gang activity in New Jersey. Fluent in Spanish from growing up in a bilingual household, he explains how language, cultural understanding, and patience became critical tools during high-stakes investigations. He walks through what large-scale cases actually look like, why they take years to build, and how evidence is layered methodically until cases are airtight.
Security Without Fear
One of the central themes of this conversation is Dan’s philosophy on security. The goal is not to live in fear, but to create visible layers that make people and homes harder targets. Simple measures like awareness, lighting, cameras, dogs, and routines often deter opportunistic crime before it ever happens.
Dan emphasizes that most people don’t need extreme measures, they need thoughtful preparation and the right mindset.
Life After the Badge
After retiring from the FBI and the Navy, Dan now finds himself in a season of life where he gets to be fully present for his family. He reflects on how years of service shaped his perspective, what it means to protect what matters most, and how his past prepared him for this next chapter as a business owner and father in Montana.
Giving Back Through the Big Sky G-Man Golf Classic
Dan is helping bring the inaugural Big Sky G-Man Golf Classic to Montana, benefiting the FBI Agents Association Membership Assistance Fund. The event supports active and retired agents facing unexpected hardship while creating a meaningful, community-focused experience here in Montana.
