From Journalism to Public Relations
Blythe’s path into public relations began with a degree in journalism and communications from Lehigh University, followed by early work in high-pressure environments like crisis communications for the Philadelphia 76ers. From managing press conferences to traveling with the team, she learned early how narratives are shaped, protected, and sometimes repaired under tight deadlines and public scrutiny.
That experience laid the foundation for her work today. Blythe explains that public relations is not just about getting clients into the news, but also about guiding them through difficult moments with honesty and transparency. For her, trust is built through clear communication and accountability, especially when things don’t go as planned.
Building Bigger Fish Unlimited
After time spent in Philadelphia, California, and Chicago, Blythe eventually found her way to Montana, a place she initially planned to visit for a month and never truly left. She founded Bigger Fish Unlimited with a focus on earned media, storytelling, and helping brands stand out in competitive markets without relying on shortcuts or hype.
Today, Bigger Fish works with a range of clients across hospitality, travel, construction, spirits, and lifestyle brands, many of them based in or connected to the Mountain West. Blythe shares why she intentionally avoids representing competing brands and how that decision allows her to advocate more authentically for each client she works with.
Crisis Communication and Crafting Narrative
One of the more unique aspects of Blythe’s work is her appreciation for crisis communications. She talks openly about why she finds this side of PR meaningful, helping clients navigate difficult situations by addressing issues directly rather than avoiding them.
Throughout the conversation, Blythe emphasizes that storytelling is not about spin. It’s about clarity, consistency, and understanding what actually matters to an audience. Whether managing media relationships or advising clients on public messaging, she returns again and again to the idea that transparency builds long-term credibility.
Life, Balance, and Choosing Montana
Beyond business, Blythe shares personal reflections on building a balanced life in Montana. From her passion for fly fishing and fitness to her decision to step away from alcohol, she talks about finding healthier ways to manage stress and stay grounded while running a demanding business.
She also reflects on how her idea of success has changed over time, moving away from big-city expectations toward a life that prioritizes independence, connection, and place. Montana, she explains, became home not by accident, but because it offered a way of living that aligned with who she was becoming.
