Matthew Gillespie on Art, Travel, and Building a Global Gallery from Montana

Tim sits down with Matthew Gillespie, founder of The Immortal Fine Art Gallery, to talk about launching an online art business, traveling the world to discover new work, and the vision behind his growing community, The Immortal Order. Matthew shares what it takes to represent artists with integrity, how art can be a form of meditation, and why building something meaningful often starts with curiosity.

Starting with a Mission

Matthew and his longtime partner, a talented artist herself, launched The Immortal Fine Art Gallery as a way to combine their passions—art, travel, and building something together.

“We wanted to showcase works that last—like the pieces you see in museums, still hanging 500 years later,” he says. That idea inspired the name “Immortal,” and the gallery’s focus on one-of-one, original pieces. Today, the site features 60–80 works at any given time from more than a dozen carefully selected artists.

Building a Community of Explorers

Beyond selling art, Matthew is building a global community. The Immortal Order is a membership-based group that invites people to become “explorers,” tasked with discovering rare works, artists, and cultural artifacts around the world.

Members are organized into private cohorts based on interests, goals, or demographics—and receive a welcome packet that includes a custom medallion and a sealed doctrine outlining their shared mission. “It’s about preserving culture, defending beauty, and building bonds,” he says.

Why Art Still Matters

For Matthew, art is more than something you hang on a wall. It’s a way to meditate. A way to connect. A way to slow down. “We’re so caught up in the grind these days. Art helps us reclaim our imagination.”

He believes part of the gallery’s job is to encourage people to appreciate beauty and creativity again—even if just for a moment. “You don’t need to drive into the mountains every time you want to feel grounded. Sometimes, the right piece of art can bring that same stillness into your home.”

The Road Ahead

Right now, The Immortal Fine Art Gallery is fully online—but the long-term goal is a brick-and-mortar location, and eventually a full-scale museum. “We’d love to bring fine art and cultural pieces from around the world to Bozeman or another U.S. city,” he says. “There’s so much potential to create a real destination here.”

With travel woven into his business, he hopes to continue discovering emerging artists abroad, helping them gain exposure, and bringing that richness back to the U.S.
