Blasting for Quartz, Life as a Miner

Sally Bleck lives a life most people will never experience, working as a contracted miner in the backcountry of Washington while building her own path in lapidary art. In this episode, she shares what it actually looks like to hike into a remote mine, drill and blast rock by hand, and uncover mineral pockets that haven’t seen light in thousands of years. From growing up rockhounding in Helena to pursuing her own future in mining, this is a conversation about physical work, patience, and finding purpose in something unconventional.

A Different Kind of Mining

Sally’s work isn’t industrial mining. It’s precise, intentional, and focused on uncovering mineral specimens like quartz and pyrite.

Each day starts with a hike into a remote mountainside site, followed by hours of drilling, reading the rock, and carefully placing blasts. The goal isn’t to destroy the rock, but to reveal what’s hidden inside it.

Unlike large-scale mining operations, this process is about patience and awareness. Reading dust color, listening to sound changes, and feeling how the drill moves can signal whether a pocket is nearby.

Opening a Pocket

At the center of it all is the “pocket”, a hollow space in the rock where crystals have formed over time.

Some are small. Some are large enough to crawl into.

And when one opens, it’s often the first time that space has ever been exposed to light.

That moment, finding something untouched and naturally formed, is what keeps people coming back to this work.

Backcountry Reality

The job itself is physically demanding and remote.

Everything gets packed in. Equipment, food, fuel. There’s no cell service, and the team depends on each other completely.

Safety is constant, from falling rock to controlled blasts. Communication matters, and decisions have real consequences.

It’s not just about skill. It’s about trust.

From Rockhounding to a Career

Sally grew up in Helena, Montana, rockhounding with her dad.

At the time, it didn’t feel exciting. Like a lot of things in childhood, it only made sense later.

Now, that early exposure has turned into a career path, combining mining with lapidary work, cutting stones for jewelers when she’s not in the field.

Her long-term goal is to build something of her own, potentially operating her own mine in Montana.

Work That Teaches You Something

There’s a different kind of perspective that comes from this work.

It’s physical, demanding, and unpredictable. It requires patience, awareness, and the ability to adapt.

There’s also something meaningful about uncovering something that’s been hidden for thousands of years and being the first person to see it.

That alone makes the work worth it.
