Nature, Nourishment, and the Path to Bodhi: A Conversation with Rayner Smith
Tim sits down with Rayner Smith of Bodhi Farms, the man who—alongside his wife Tanya—helps manage and shape one of the Bozeman area’s most immersive, sustainable destinations. Bodhi Farms is a 35-acre boutique eco-resort rooted in permaculture, farm-to-table dining, and nature-based wellness experiences. From glamping to creekside massages, this place invites guests to slow down and reconnect.
The Five Pillars of ‘FRESH’
Rayner breaks down Bodhi Farms using the acronym FRESH: Farm and gardens, Restaurant, Events, Spa, and Hospitality. All five elements are deeply integrated across the property, which is nestled just 15 minutes from downtown Bozeman but feels worlds away.
“Everything we do out there is tied in with one of our passions.”
The couple grows much of the produce on-site, sources proteins locally, and cooks almost exclusively over fire. Lodging includes nine glamping tipis right along the creek, while dining shifts seasonally from open-air summer feasts to intimate winter dinners in heated tents.
Spa, Saunas, and Wild Creek Dips
The Bodhi Spa offers creekside massages, yoga in the woods, and a traditional wood-fired sauna. It’s all designed to bring wellness back into harmony with the natural rhythms of the land.
“Our sauna is small, hot, wood-fired—and right next to the creek for your cold plunge.”
Private bookings are encouraged, and locals or visitors can reserve individual spa services or multi-day retreats right from their website.
Deep Roots and Real Values
Rayner and Tanya didn’t just assemble a trendy resort. They created a place that reflects their own values and lifestyle. From their commitment to zero food waste to their food mantra—focusing only on what could have been cooked here 100 years ago—everything is intentional.
“When you restrict yourself, that’s really where creativity comes from.”
Their approach draws culinary influence from Indigenous food traditions and early Montana settlers. It’s a dining experience built on reverence and restraint.
Events, Education, and the Path to ‘Bodhi’
Bodhi means “the path to enlightenment.” Education is baked into everything they do—whether it’s kids camps, naturalist workshops, or just a casual dinner that teaches guests something new about the land.
“They didn’t come for a lesson, but hopefully they leave with something unexpected.”
The farm hosts movie nights, weddings, retreats, and their annual Farm to Table Food Festival. Whether guests stay overnight or swing by for yoga and lunch, the team wants them to feel welcome, grounded, and a little more connected.
