In this episode of Mountain Mule Media, Tim sits down with Erin Groth, founder of Current Movement Studio in Bozeman, Montana. Erin teaches and practices the Gyrotonic Expansion System — a movement method built on circular motion, rhythm, and breath that helps people reconnect with their bodies in ways traditional fitness often overlooks. Through her story, Erin shares how mindful, spiral-based movement can support healing, flexibility, and balance — not just in the body, but in the mind and spirit.

Discovering a New Way to Move
Erin describes Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis as systems that explore the body’s full range of movement — emphasizing decompression, mobility, and joint health. “Our joints and spine are capable of so much more than what we use day to day,” she explains. “This work helps people rediscover that potential.”
The practice differs from yoga or Pilates in that it focuses on spirals and circles rather than linear planes of motion. Using specialized equipment or floor work, participants learn to move fluidly, filling in the “in-between places” of motion. The result is a practice that strengthens and opens the body while calming the mind.
Erin works with clients of all ages — from athletes to seniors — and often welcomes people who are rebuilding strength after injury or physical therapy. “Healing happens on more than one level,” she says. “Physical movement is just the beginning.”
Movement as Medicine
Erin’s path to this work began with her own healing. Years ago, while living in Seattle, she developed severe rheumatoid arthritis after running a coffee business and raising two young children. Her body, as she describes it, “finally said no.” Doctors prescribed medication, but Erin soon realized she needed to move differently — to listen rather than push.
Through the circular, restorative movements of Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis, Erin found a way to relieve pain, rebuild strength, and eventually achieve complete remission. “It’s a supportive movement system,” she explains. “Any effort you put into it — physically, mentally, or spiritually — gives you something back. You learn what your body needs instead of forcing it.”
That transformation led her to open Current Movement Studio in Bozeman, a home-based space dedicated to mindful, intentional movement. Her classes help others find what she discovered through her own process: the possibility of healing through curiosity, awareness, and gentle consistency.
Community and Connection
Beyond her studio, Erin leads free community classes at the Bozeman Senior Center and Bozeman Public Library, where she introduces the fundamentals of Gyrokinesis to anyone curious to try it. The classes welcome a mix of seniors, professionals, and active adults who want to add restorative motion to their week.
“Movement shouldn’t be intimidating,” she says. “We start where people are, not where we think they should be.”
Erin believes deeply in meeting students with care and authenticity. Before every private session, she takes time to build rapport — learning about a client’s goals, injuries, and comfort level. “The real work,” she says, “isn’t just about the exercises. It’s about helping people reconnect with themselves.”
A Lifetime of Learning
A native of West Yellowstone, Erin grew up immersed in Montana’s outdoors. She’s been a snowboarder, runner, and lifelong explorer of movement. After years in city life and entrepreneurship, she found her way back home to Bozeman — bringing with her a global practice with roots in human connection.
Her philosophy extends beyond exercise. “It’s about being a whole human being,” Erin says. “We can’t separate physical from emotional health. When you move with awareness, you open the door to everything else — resilience, creativity, and joy.”
For Erin, that’s the heart of Current Movement Studio: creating a space where people can feel grounded, supported, and curious about what their bodies can do — no matter their age or ability.
