In this episode of Mountain Mule Media, Tim sits down with Tom Barrett, owner of OSO Security, one of Bozeman’s longest-standing residential and commercial security companies. What starts as a conversation about alarms and access control quickly becomes a deeper discussion about trust, responsibility, business growth, and what it really means to protect the things that matter.

A Family Business Built to Last
OSO Security was founded in 2001 by Tom’s father, long before Bozeman’s current growth boom. Tom took over the business in 2017, carrying forward a model built on longevity rather than rapid expansion. In a region that has seen plenty of short-term “cash grab” businesses come and go, OSO has grown slowly, almost entirely through word of mouth.
For Tom, that longevity is the clearest signal of a good business.
Security Beyond Break-Ins
While many people think of security as burglary prevention, Tom explains that the most common and costly issues in Southwest Montana often come from environmental threats, frozen pipes, leaks, temperature drops, and unoccupied homes during long winter stretches.
OSO systems are designed with Montana’s climate in mind, combining burglary protection, life safety, fire alarms, access control, and environmental monitoring to prevent problems before they become disasters.
Big Sky, Bozeman, and a Changing Community
Tom grew up in Bozeman and spent years in law enforcement in Wyoming before returning to run the business. He’s seen firsthand how growth changes communities. As Bozeman and Big Sky continue to expand, crime patterns shift, homes sit vacant longer, and security becomes less about fear and more about preparation.
His perspective is grounded and realistic, no town is immune, no matter how charming it looks on the surface.
Answering the Phone Still Matters
One of the most striking parts of this conversation is Tom’s commitment to accessibility. For years, when customers called OSO Security, they got Tom himself. That philosophy wasn’t always easy, but it built deep trust and long-term relationships.
Only recently did Tom take the step of bringing someone else on to help answer calls, a move that forced him to confront one of the hardest parts of business ownership, letting go while maintaining standards.
Business, Health, and Perspective
Tom also shares a deeply personal experience, discovering an unruptured brain aneurysm by chance and undergoing open brain surgery shortly after the birth of his daughter. That experience reshaped his view of time, work, and what success really looks like.
The conversation weaves through parenting, boundaries, burnout, presence, and the constant balancing act business owners face as they try to build something meaningful without losing themselves in the process.
Finding Balance Outside of Work
From saunas and cold plunges to knitting, yoga, and intentional downtime, Tom talks openly about the small practices that help him slow down, reset, and stay present. In a fast-paced, always-connected world, these moments of disconnection have become essential.
