From One Employee to a Growing Team

Blanton Contracting officially stepped into business as a standalone company in 2020, but the foundation was laid years earlier through spec homes, partnerships, and Vince’s background in heavy civil construction.

As the company grew, so did the challenges. Managing projects became one thing. Managing people, culture, systems, and expectations became something entirely different.

Rather than chasing growth at all costs, Vince describes intentionally slowing down at times to strengthen the company’s foundation before taking the next step forward.

The Difference Between a Founder and a CEO

One of the most interesting parts of the conversation centers around Vince’s distinction between a founder and a CEO.

The founder is willing to do everything. They’re in the field, solving problems, handling sales, estimating jobs, and putting out fires.

The CEO focuses on building systems, developing people, and creating long-term direction.

For many entrepreneurs, including Vince, learning to remove themselves from day-to-day operations can be one of the hardest transitions in business.

As companies grow, success often depends less on what the owner can personally accomplish and more on how effectively they can empower others.

Why Culture Matters

Blanton Contracting has grown largely through referrals and relationships, both with clients and employees.

Many of the company’s hires have come through existing team members, referrals, and relationships built over time. Vince credits much of the company’s success to hiring people who value accountability, professionalism, and personal growth.

Instead of building a culture around rigid scorecards and excessive bureaucracy, the team focuses on communication, ownership, and trust.

The Power of a Strong “Say-Do Ratio”

One of Vince’s favorite business principles is what he calls a strong “say-do ratio.”

The concept is simple:

If you say you’re going to do something, do it.

In an industry where trust is critical and projects can span multiple years, reputation becomes one of the most valuable assets a company can have.

That consistency has helped Blanton Contracting earn repeat business from clients, architects, engineers, developers, and business owners throughout the Gallatin Valley.

Building Montana’s Future

The conversation also explores the rapid growth of Belgrade and the Gallatin Valley.

From commercial developments and custom homes to new business facilities and infrastructure projects, Vince has had a front-row seat to Montana’s continued growth.

Rather than viewing growth as something to fear, he sees opportunity for businesses, families, and communities that are committed to doing things the right way.

AI, Technology, and the Future of Construction

Like many business owners, Vince is actively exploring how artificial intelligence can improve operations and decision-making.

While construction still relies heavily on skilled people and hands-on work, he believes AI will continue reshaping how businesses analyze information, manage projects, and improve efficiency.

The challenge isn’t the technology itself. It’s learning how to use it effectively.

Final Thoughts

Whether discussing leadership, construction, hiring, reputation, or Montana’s future, one theme remains constant throughout this conversation:

Strong businesses are built the same way strong buildings are built.

One step at a time.

With the right foundation.

And by consistently doing what you said you were going to do.
