When people remember a vacation, they rarely talk about the mattress or the television. They remember how a place made them feel.
In Episode 127 of Mountain Mule Media, Carson Mabe, Hotel Manager at Wandering Buffalo, she shares how Bozeman’s newest boutique hotel is trying to create something that feels different from the moment guests walk through the door. From custom furniture and locally made products to genuine hospitality, the goal isn’t simply to provide a room. It’s to create an experience people remember.
Listen on:
Hospitality Is More Than Customer Service
Carson has worked in hospitality since 2017, beginning as a housekeeper in Yellowstone before working her way into hotel management.
That perspective shapes how she thinks about every guest interaction.
Rather than viewing hospitality as checking someone in or answering questions, she sees it as creating memories. The people travelers meet often become the most memorable part of a trip, and every interaction is an opportunity to leave a lasting impression.
A Boutique Hotel Can Do Things Big Hotels Can’t
With just 38 rooms, Wandering Buffalo has an advantage many larger hotels don’t.
Carson explained that nearly every guest speaks with her or another member of the management team during their stay. That creates a personal atmosphere that’s difficult to replicate inside a large corporate property.
After spending years working within larger hotel brands, she appreciates the freedom that comes with an independent hotel. Instead of following a corporate playbook, the team gets to decide what works, adapt quickly, and continue shaping the guest experience.
Every Detail Was Chosen on Purpose
One of Carson’s favorite descriptions of the hotel is simple.
“Everything makes you want to touch it.”
Leather furniture that develops character over time, bold Western-inspired patterns, custom pieces, cozy gathering spaces, and thoughtful design choices all work together to make the hotel feel more like a custom home than a traditional hotel.
It’s an intentional reminder that design isn’t just about appearance. It changes how people experience a place.
Supporting Montana Doesn’t Stop With the Guests
The hotel’s commitment to Montana extends beyond the people who stay there.
The lobby Mercantile highlights products from local makers, guests are encouraged to visit local businesses, and Montana residents receive discounted rates for their own stays or when family visits. The hotel also serves locally roasted Rockford coffee and continues adding Montana-made products throughout the year.
Rather than simply existing in Bozeman, the goal is to become part of the community.
Finding Home Hundreds of Miles Away
Carson originally moved to Yellowstone from Alabama at nineteen after watching her brother work a season there.
What started as a seasonal adventure eventually became a career.
Interestingly, she says Montana and Alabama have more in common than most people realize. Both places value hospitality, spending time outdoors, and building strong communities. The landscapes may be different, but the people often aren’t.
