Sustainability can feel like an overwhelming topic.
It’s often framed as something that requires massive investments or sweeping policy changes. But according to Zosia Skiba, meaningful progress usually starts with much smaller decisions.
In Episode 129 of Mountain Mule Media, Zosia shares how the Sustainability Network Organization, better known as SNO, is helping Big Sky businesses become more efficient, reduce waste, and strengthen the community one practical improvement at a time.
Listen on:
Sustainability Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that sustainability isn’t necessarily about doing everything.
It’s about doing something.
Turning off lights after closing, switching to LED bulbs, reducing unnecessary printing, composting food waste, or encouraging employees to carpool may seem like small actions individually. Together, they create measurable savings for businesses while reducing unnecessary waste throughout the community.
Helping Businesses Improve, Not Judging Them
SNO’s Sustainable Business Achievement isn’t designed to criticize businesses.
Instead, it’s meant to recognize what they’re already doing well while helping identify practical opportunities for improvement.
Businesses complete an assessment, receive personalized feedback, and if they meet the program’s standards, they’re recognized as a Sustainable Business Achievement recipient. More importantly, the relationship doesn’t end there. SNO continues providing resources and support as those businesses continue improving.
Efficiency Often Saves Money
One of the more interesting parts of the discussion was how often sustainability aligns with good business.
Energy-efficient lighting reduces utility costs.
Thoughtful purchasing reduces waste.
Carpooling cuts transportation expenses.
Water-saving fixtures lower utility bills.
Many of these improvements pay for themselves while also reducing environmental impact, making sustainability less of a sacrifice and more of a smart business decision.
Community Is Part of the Solution
SNO’s work extends well beyond individual businesses.
The organization partners with local nonprofits, chambers of commerce, event organizers, and volunteers to support projects ranging from zero-waste events to wildfire preparedness and water conservation.
Rather than asking one organization to solve every problem, the goal is to build a network of businesses and community members all moving in the same direction.
Small Actions Create Bigger Change
One point Zosia returned to several times was the idea that people often underestimate the impact of small actions.
A single employee remembering to shut off lights.
Three coworkers choosing to carpool.
A restaurant composting food waste instead of sending it to the landfill.
None of those actions solve everything on their own.
But when hundreds of businesses begin making similar choices, the cumulative impact becomes significant.
